Buyers set two new world records on the champion and reserve champion lots during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Junior Market Barrow Auction, Friday, March 16.

The Grand Champion Junior Market Barrow, exhibited by Hannah Simpson, 14, of Dimmitt, Texas, sold for a world record of $214,000 to buyers Jackie and Jon Hodges; McCarthy Building Companies; Stronghold Limited; and Debby and Jeff Young. Bob Rogers, representing McCarthy Building Companies, explained that he supports the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo because of the youth component.

“It’s great to be part of an organization that benefits youth and rewards hard work,” Rogers said.

The Reserve Grand Champion Junior Market Barrow, a home-raised barrow exhibited by Katelyn Cozart, 17, of Early, Texas, sold for another world record of $134,000. Buyers Mickie and Jim Clark; Tori and Ed DeCora; Tracey and Jim O’Neil; and Bobby and Robert Shockley all contributed to the record-breaking bid.

Robert Shockley has supported the auctions at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for 23 years, and said he chose to invest in this organization because of how great and encouraging the donors are to the kids.

“This is the greatest Rodeo in the world,” Robert Shockley said. “I love helping these kids go to college, it is fantastic.”

More than 2,700 barrows were exhibited at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 2018. Both Champion and Reserve Champion Junior Market Barrows were selected from the Hampshire Division.
